Families step back in time at camp in Echuca

For the first time the ACT Office held a Family Camp in the historical town of Echuca, with ten families attending from the Central West, Riverina and Canberra Region. Along with five volunteers, the families enjoyed a weekend jam packed with fun and bonding at the Discovery Park Grounds.

Families arrived on Friday evening at the wonderful Discovery Parks - Echuca. After settling in the families got the chance to catch up, mingle and share stories over a dinner of delicious pizza. Having too much fun to go to bed, post dinner the group retreated to one of the volunteer’s holiday houses for a games night of Bingo, Mouse Trap and Twister.

The following day families enjoyed a barbecue breakfast cooked up by the Rotary Club of Echuca-Moama. After some time exploring the campsite, which included a game of handball and some acrobatics on the jumping pillow, everyone got into their cars and made their way into town where the adventures really began. Families were treated to a river cruise down the Murray River and some lucky kids even got to try their hand at driving the Paddle Steamer using the original steering wheel.

Once back on dry land the group were given a historical tour of the Port of Echuca, with guides dressed appropriately in historical outfits. Through an underground tunnel the families learnt the secrets of the historical town and how generations before them used to live. After the tour, families and volunteers enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Shamrock Hotel and a visit to Sharpes Movie House and Penny Arcade where they watched a black and white film and played classic penny-operated arcade games to truly transport them into another era.

After a full day of exploring Echuca’s hot spots everyone headed back to the campsite, where kids were greeted by the wonderful team from Lorraine Lea to run a pillowcase decorating and mini sack race activity. This gave all the parents the chance to enjoy some time to themselves and catch up with other parents. As the sun started to set everybody got ready for the Saturday night dinner which was held at the Moama RSL. The evening was topped off by a magical performance from Dazzling Dan the Magic Man, who wowed the audience with his wit, humor and of course his tricks.

To finish the weekend families spent time at the Billabong Ranch, where everyone got to try their hand at mini golf, rock climbing, paddle boating and kayaking. Families also had a tour of the animal nursery and got to meet some of the local animal residents on the ranch. After final goodbye cuddles everyone left with big smiles on their face and a new group of friends for life!

About Camp Quality Family Camp

Camp Quality’s Family Camp offers families impacted by cancer the chance to reconnect with each other and make new connections with families in a similar situation.

The camps build a tool kit of resources for the ongoing experiences families face and can create lifelong friendships.

It is an opportunity to relax and make memories not centred on sickness - often for the first time since a diagnosis. Over 450 families impacted by cancer went to over 50 Family Camps in 2016.
